How to Find Meaning In Any Job

How to Find Meaning In Any JobHow to Find Meaning In Any Job According to the latest research, more than 50 percent of Millennials would give up part of their salary to work for a cause near and dear to their heart, and the majority (90 percent) want to use their skills for good. Unfortunately, job opportunities (and salaries) at non-profits make it difficult for everyone who wants to work for a cause to do so. But does that mean youre resigned to meaningless work forever? Nope As it turns out, any job can be turned into a meaningful work with the right attitude it just requires a shift in perspective. Whether you work in a service industry or a for-profit industry, if youre paid for your work, there is an end user who is receiving help from you. You simply need to think it through and focus on the person youre helping. For example, for a few years, I worked in web content writing and editing as a government contractor. As much as I loved my red pen, there were some days that were a little spreadsheet heavy, and Id find myself watching the clock for 5 PM. But one day, I realized the work I was doing wasnt just for a paycheck. At the end of the day, the content we were making and uploading to the government site truly made a difference in the lives of military families . What I was doing felt far removed from the reality of raising a family and running a household with a deployed spouse, but the result of my work was a direct hand up to people in that position. What a game changerWhile my job was somewhat service oriented, the principle works for almost any industry. If you work in IT security in banking , youre protecting entire populations of businesses and families from the stress, confusion, and long-term consequences of identity theft. If you work in retail, youre helping people find and purchase the things they need to manage their lives, from food and clothes to computer products and entertainment. What an impact As Marian Wrigh t Edelman says, Never work just for money or for power. They wont save your soul or help you sleep at night. If you find yourself driven to have a positive impact on the world, dont jump right to the conclusion that you need a new job. No matter what kind of job you have, its entirely within your power to make your work meaningful work right where you are.

U.S. Military Enlistment Process and Job Selection

U.S. Military Enlistment Process and Job SelectionU.S. Military Enlistment Process and Job SelectionEnlisting into the military should be a calling for young men and women to serve, not just a job to get if you have no other place to go. The military offers exceptional job training, educational benefits, paid vacation, and medical and dental care. Make sure you know what you want to do before you talk to a recruiter and drive the conversation and actions of the recruiter to what you want to do - as long as you qualify for it. Once the recruiter has determined your qualifications for enlistment (or got permission from his/her superiors to process you, in the event a waiver is required), youll start the enlistment process. Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) The first hurdle you must verstndigung im strafverfahren with is determining if you are medically qualified to join the military. The ball first gets rolling by the recruiter sending your forms and paperwork to MEPS (Mil itary Entrance Processing Station), where the real processing is done. The Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) While this test is usually accomplished at MEPS, it can also be done in high school. The ASVAB is used to determine what jobs you are academically eligible for. It is smart for you to take a month and do a few online practice ASVAB tests or get a book with practice tests and tips to score better. The reason you need to score well on the ASVAB as it may determine whether or not you get your number one choice of jobs after boot camp / basic training. There are three ways to take the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude BatteryASVAB to qualify for military service (and military job qualification). It can be taken in high school, ora paper version at MEPS, or in a computerized version at MEPS. The third option is the way most recruits take the ASVAB. The visit to MEPS is two-phased Part of the process does not belong to any individual service. Its a joint-service op eration, that attempts to determine whether or not you are qualified for the military. This includes a medical examination and the testing (ASVAB, DLAB, etc.) portions of MEPS. Job Qualifications To get the job of your choice in the armed forces is not guaranteed. There has to be an available vacancy, and you have to be qualified.Job qualification is based on several factors. fruchtwein significant are your ASVAB line scores. The services have assignedminimum ASVABline scoresto each enlisted job. In addition to ASVAB line scores, many jobsrequire the applicant to qualify for asecurity clearance. If the applicant has anything in their background that may prevent approval of clearance, the MEPS job counselors are unlikely to allow the applicant to reserve that job. Some jobs require additional testing. For example, any job that requires one to learn a foreign language requires a passing score on theDefense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB). Different jobs have different physical req uirements. When one goes through their medical examination at MEPS, one is assigned aPhysical Profile, which is a series of numbers that indicates the members medical condition in designated medical areas. In buchen to reserve a job, one must meet the minimum physical profile required for that job. Your recruiter should remind you and test you often if you are seeking some of the tougher programs in the military like Army Ranger / Special Forces, Navy SEAL / EOD / SWCC, Marine RECON, or Air Force PJ. However, if you seek Army or USMC Infantry, you need to prepare yourself for the challenges of after boot camp as well.Getting in shape prior to MEPS is critical for some of the Special Ops / Combat jobs. Each of the services has different policies/procedures when it comes to guaranteed jobs - often if you fail any of these tests prior to basic, you will lose your guaranteed slot. Jobs in the Army In the Army, anenlisted jobis called a MOS, or military occupational specialty. The Arm y is the only service that offers a guaranteed job (MOS) to everyone, even though it might not be the exact one you want. It depends upon your qualifications and what jobs have current or projected openings. If the job you want is not available, your only choices are to choose a different job, or not enlist if there is nothing else you prefer to do in the Army. Jobs in the Air Force The Air Force calls itsenlisted jobsAir Force specialty codes (AFSC) The Air Force has two enlistment options Guaranteed Job, and Guaranteed Aptitude Area. Under the guaranteed job program, the applicant is guaranteed training in a specific Air Force job. Under the guaranteed aptitudeprogram, the applicant is guaranteed that he will be selected for a job that falls into one of the designated aptitude areas. The Air Force has divided all of their jobs intofour aptitude areas general, electronic, mechanical, and administrative. Because the Air Force has many more applicants than they have slots, it is very common for an applicant to process through MEPS, and return enlisted in the delayed enlistment program without a reserved job-slot or shipping date. Instead, while at MEPS, they provide a list of job and aptitude area preferences to the job counselor, then they are placed on the qualified waiting list, for one of their preferences to become available. This can take several months. Its not uncommon, these days, for an Air Force applicant to remain in the DEP for 8 or more months before finally shipping out to basic training. In order to join the Air Force, one must be flexible with both job selections and dates of availability. For those with lots of flexibility, the Air Force has a program called the quick ship list. Every once in a while, an applicant with a reserved slot will drop out of the DEP at the last minute. The Air Force will allow applicants in the DEP to voluntarily put their name on the quick ship list to take the place of the applicant who dropped out. Be ready to go while in DEP as you can get the call to leave in less than a week in some cases. You do not have to go as they will offer the early slot to someone else, but getting another opportunity is hit or miss with some job specialties. Jobs in the Navy The Navy calls theirenlisted jobsratings. The Navy offers two programs guaranteed job, and undesignated seaman. The Navy also has some special enlistment programs whereby you can enlist knowing what area you are going into, but not your specific rating (job). Jobs in the Marines Like the Army, anenlisted jobin theMarine studentencorpsiscalled a MOS.The Marines also offertwo programs Guaranteed job, and general field. Very few Marine applicants get a guaranteed jobmostly those with college degrees or high ASVAB scores, applying for certain, designated technical specialties. Jobs in the Coast Guard Like the Navy, enlisted jobsin the Coast Guard are referred to as ratings. Of all of the services, the Coast Guard offers the fewest guaranteed jobs. One normally enlists in theCoast Guard, undesignated, then strikes for a job after a period of on-the-job training in basic coast-guardsman-ship at their first duty station. A few schools (and therefore jobs) are offered during basic training. As well as offering the fewest guaranteed jobs, the Coast Guard has the fewest overall jobs (about 23) of any of the services. On the plus side, for the most part, all of the Coast Guard jobs directly relate to a civilian occupation. Jobs in the Reserves and National Guard TheArmy National GuardandAir National Guard, as well as the reserve forces of all the branches, give guaranteed jobsto everyone who enlists. This is because unlike the active-duty forces, who recruit for available slots all over the world, the Guard and Reserves recruit for specific unit vacancies in their local areas. Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) Once the job counselors have helped you determine yourjob/enlistment program youll sign an enlistmen t contract and take an oath, enlisting you in the delayed enlistment program (DEP).The DEP is a holding status while you are waiting for your scheduled shipping date to basic training.

Ashley Furniture Home Stores

Ashley Furniture Home StoresAshley Furniture Home StoresAshley Furniture Home StoresOur goal is loftier than just making money. Jeffrey Zaffron is Managing Director of a licensing company that operates Ashley Furniture Home Stores in Western Texas and Eastern New Mexico. He employs mora than 100 people who work in more than 175,000 feet of space in four stores. That area is larger than three football fields plenty of room to show off sofas and lamps. When you talk to Jeff, however, you get a sense that the key to his business is closeness to his parent corporation and to his customers. Keeping a focus on two relationships is vital to his success. On a large scale, the relationship between giant Ashley Furniture Industries, North Americas largest selling furniture manufacturer, and its licensees is closer than a typical supplier/retailer exchange. Ashley can use its size, design teams, manufacturing and long-haul trucking capabilities to lower costs for its store opera tors, so they can offer greater value at lower prices. Thats a prodigious advantage, but when it comes to hiring, another relationship matters more. On a small scale, Jeff Zaffron knows he must hire people who can build relationships over the long term with customers, especially in his competitive retail niche. Jeff explainsWere in smaller cities Lubbock is the largest at 250,000 people so finding people is always challenging. We look for the best and brightest people they dont have to be from a furniture background. Selling and marketing are inherently about forming a relationship. If you have the ability to connect with a person, you can potentially be good in sales. There are other furniture stores, car dealers, and many other venues where people with transferable skills like sales can find work, so its competitive. Our difference is that we want people who understand that our purpose is to help people. Our goal is loftier than just making money.Help people? A furnit ure store? We live where we work, continues Jeff. West Texas and Eastern New Mexico have tight-knit communities, and we pride ourselves on tafelgeschirr before, during and after the sale. Sales consultants greet customers at the door, offer bottled water if its hot outside, and answer questions with high product knowledge If a customer has a question about the mechanism on a reclining sofa, sales consultants can answer without referring to a book in the back room.We also believe wholeheartedly that we need to be good corporate citizens we need to be a good part of the community, rather than a big, impersonal furniture store. We have our own events here like rock walls for the kids on certain days, or philanthropic activities. Its about making Lubbock or Amarillo or Hobbes a better place. Whats a Porter? Where in West Texas will you hire a porter? Where will you find a visual merchandiser? For that matter, what do they do? They set the scene, and everything follows from that. Walk into an Ashley HomeStore and you wont find a sea of sofas. Instead, the stores contain many small, fully furnished rooms called vignettes. In the vignettes, the sofa, love seat, cocktail table, lamps, end tables, rugs, artworkeverything is carefully designed by a visual merchandiser who decorates and re-decorates under the watchful eye of Jeffs director of visual design (a job that merges marketing and interior design). Porters are the people who arrange and maintain these rooms. The effect is to inspire customers to have them walk into a vignette and say, Oh yes Thats what Im looking for Hire for GrowthRelationship-building is a transferable skill, which means Jeff faces competition for talent outside his industry (from car dealers and other retailers). He attracts the best candidates with potential growth opportunities. For example, he says, We opened a new store in Hobbs New Mexico, which is experiencing explosive growth. Advertising on brought us dozens of candidates for individual positions who also had mischform verschiedener musikstile potential. We were able to take someone who applied for a sales managers job in Hobbs NM and match them up with a store manger, sales manager, or operations manager job in another store as well. Im looking for people who can grow within our organization, and that becomes a long term relationship too.Hiring Tip from Jeff Zaffron Think of reading resumes and interviewing as an intelligence-gathering activity. Take your time until you find a person who really understands what the goal is. A marketing person has to swing the door and a sales person has to close the sale, but when youre operating in a close, tight-knit community like us, you actually need people who want to do right by themselves, their families and their neighbors.

How Your Network Can Help You Be Better at Your Job

How Your Network Can Help You Be Better at Your JobHow Your Network Can Help You Be Better at Your JobStaying in touch with your network isnt easy- from finding reasons to drop people a line to finding the time to actually do it, its no wonder many of us put it off until its essential (i.e., when were job hunting). But really, if you only reach out to people during times of career transition, youre wasting a valuable resource for your professional development. Read on for five easy ways your contacts can help you excel at your current gig- and how to reach out the right way.You Need A RoadmapYou Know Someone Whos Been ThereMy former boss gave an amazing speech on the occasion of leaving our organization, lightened by humorous references to the number of times she Googled how to do something. And while I could (and often do) make use of that option, I also have a better one her. Shes written budgets and strategic plans and gone toe-to-toe with difficult clients. Meaning, when Im starin g down a new or confusing situation, I know she can advise me from a place of experience. Even though shes no longer my boss, shes parte of my network- and shes been willing to help me on numerous occasions.Of course, there are a few things to keep in mind when approaching a contact for advice. First, be armed with a specific pitch that concisely lays out what you need and how much time it will take Would you have an hour in the next week to answer a few questions about writing a budget? versus Can you help me with some budget stuff?Second, do your prep work before the meeting and try to get as far as you can on your own- the last thing you want is to squander the time with FAQs. Third, this cant be an every week (or even an every month) thing. Unless this contact is your mentor, you should reach out once a quarter, max. Need mora help than that? Reach out to anotlageher contact. You Need Expertise (in a Hurry)You Know Someone in a Different FieldYou have a contract that needs lookin g over, and your friend is a lawyer. Or, you need to brush up on your language skills before an upcoming business trip, and your old colleague moonlights as a language tutor. When you need specialized expertise in a pinch, thats a perfect reason to reach out to the people in your network. In some ways, thats exactly what theyre there for. That said, be careful when youre asking someone in your network for a favor- especially if its to help you more quickly or more cheaply than someone youd hire. The key here is to remember that networking is a two-way street. One great option is bartering- i.e., in exchange for the language tutor giving you a crash course before your trip, you offer to revamp his homepage. Another option is asking to be pointed in the right direction If your friend the lawyer cant help you with the contract because itll require sizable revisions, she should still be able to recommend someone who can help you or give you a sense of what hiring a professional may cost. Either way, youll have more information than you began with. You Need Help With an EventYou Know Someone Whos Done it BeforeEvent planning requires a lot of legwork, not the least of which- from sourcing venues to finding quality vendors- is logistical. Imagine how much time you could save speaking with someone who already knew that this venue has a ton of parking and that venue has issue with its air conditioning that this bakery is excellent and that caterer is not.So, if youre tasked with throwing a conference, event, or even a meeting, reach out both formally and informally to your networks. Tell your friend who coordinates events for her job and your friend the recent bride alike that other projects as assigned translates to gala-planning, and youd love their advice. And dont be afraid to post a facebook inc or LinkedIn status asking your contacts if they know any great, local venues (or caterers, or photographers). Youll save tons of time on your search and be moving forward w ith tried and trusted locations and vendors. You Need Honest FeedbackYou Know Someone Who You Trust A young woman I recruited a few years ago recently asked me to beta test me her new site. She was clear in her expectations- she needed honest (brutal, where necessary) feedback before the site was launched- and she knew that friends and family (the people you can hook to beta test because, well, they love you) can be shy when it comes to criticism.I was particularly enthusiastic about helping because of the way she reached out to me. She wrote me a thoughtful email, briefly filling me in on what brought her to the project and clearly expressing what she was trying to do with the site. Moreover, once I agreed to be a beta tester, she responded to every email I sent promptly, thoroughly, and with gratitude. The way she conducted herself through this process not only convinced me to spend hours scouring the site, but also left me with an even higher opinion of her professionalism. By rea ching out, she not only got the help she needed- she deepened her relationship with a contact. You Need Nothing- Right NowYou Know Two People You Can ConnectHave a friend whos looking to start freelancing- and an old colleague who successfully made the switch years ago? A co-worker who needs to hire a temp and a college buddy whos a recruiter? Introducing them is more than just good karma- its good for your career. Yes, networking is all about making connections that will be valuable for you, but sometimes whats most impressive is someone who helps and connects others when theres nothing in it for him or her. And need I mention the fact that when you need an introduction down the road, the people you connected will likely be inclined to return the favor? In these cases, just make koranvers to do a double-opt-in intro, asking each party for his or her permission to make the introduction before you actually do. A simple, Hey, I know youre looking for an extra set of hands- want me to ma ke an intro to my friend the recruiter? works perfectly.Reaching out to your networking is a necessity when youre looking for a job. But even when youre not- dont forget all your connections can do to help you do your job better.

A 3D Approach to Nerve Damage

A 3D Approach to Nerve Damage A 3D Approach to Nerve Damage To patients who suffer from nerve damage, the effects can be devastating. It can cost patients the ability to play sports or even simply walk. But a new treatment for nerve damage may be around the corner, a combination of 3D printing and 3D imaging.Nerve damage can come from many areas, but its all too common that unfortunate accidents create the problem, says Michael McAlpine, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Minnesota. Fixing the problem? Thats the part that can get tough. As is often the case, it was an earlier project that led to this current work. We had a project that involved neurons, McAlpine explains We became a full-on 3D printing group and the thought was that there may be a way to use it for integrating neuronal cells and maybe for regenerating them, and that grew into nerve regeneration.A new postdoctoral student injected a much-needed point of view into the mix. He came up with the idea t hat if you can use 3D printing for a scaffold for nerve regeneration then maybe you could also customize it. Maybe we can go beyond linear tubes to something mora complicated like actually regenerating branching nerve structures, McAlpine says. It was actually a realistic idea because if someone comes in with a nerve injury, this can often affect branch point, motor nerves, etc.A 3D-printed nerve regeneration pathway implanted in a rat. Image University of MinnesotaThe project took an extended amount of time because they first had to develop the 3D printers that could achieve it, incorporate cues, and do a study with rats. The majority of commercial printers are printing hard plastic and thats fine, but the problem is there isnt a whole lot you can do with hard plastic with biological systems that are stretchable, for example, he says. You want a softer scaffold, something more in tune with a biological environment. A soft scaffold also allowed us to suture onto the nerve end so you can suture a device onto it and it allows the rat to run freely. The team had droplets of polypeptid called nerve growth factor, which they printed within the scaffold, he says. The droplets helped promote the regeneration process and promoted the regrowth of the nerve over a study that was somewhere in the neighborhood of twelve weeks, he says. Traditional printers couldnt print droplets of protein. The results have been encouraging to him. For the rat subjects, they actually were going from having trouble walking to being able to run, he says. But the reality is this kind of work could be applied to so many nerves, not just related to this kind of movement. And the work involved regenerating both motor function and sensory information in the rat, something that is difficult to do without a 3D printer, McAlpine says. Its difficult because most guides people create are linear, so you can do motor or sensory but its different when talking about both, he explains. With the 3D printer, yo u can do any geometry you want, so you can do a branch structure for both motor and sensory. And maybe, just maybe, the work will make its way into medical facilities someday. Also, courts may choose to disregard any provisions that they feel are inequitable under the circumstances.Party InformationWhat is a Referred Name?A referred name is a name that a party will be referred to as throughout the agreement. LawDepots cohabitation agreement includes an optional clause stating that the transfer of present or future property between the two parties must be evidenced in writing. If this clause was selected and Alex wanted to give ownership of his vehicle to Mary, the two would need a written contract as evidence of the transaction. Responsibility for the payment of a separate debt will be solely on the party who has either incurred the debt or agreed to take responsibility for the debt. What are Shared Debts?Shared Debts are debts tha t both parties are responsible for. Shared Debts will be divided in the event of a breakup. Responsibility for the repayment of a Shared Debt will fall on both parties, although not always in an equal amount. The amount that each party must contribute to the repayment of a shared debt depends on how shared debts are assessed in the event of a breakup. How should Shared Debts be assessed in the event of a separation? There are many different ways that Shared Debts can be assessed in the event of a breakup. LawDepots cohabitation agreement allows you to select the two most common ways of assessing debts or create your own. The two common answers you can select are Each party will be responsible for 50% of the debt and Responsibility will be based on the financial contribution of each party. To create your own clause, select Other and enter your preferred method for assessing debt in a complete sentence or paragraph. The following is an example of the kind of clause you could createAlex will be responsible for 75% of all Shared Debts related to renovation costs. Mary will be responsible for 25% of all Shared Debts related to renovation costs. Each party will be responsible for 50% of all Shared Debts that are not related to renovation costs. ChildrenWhat are Dependent Children?Dependent children are natural or adopted children that still rely on their parent(s) for financial support. Usually a child is considered a dependent until the age of 18. However, an older child can still be considered a dependent if there are special circumstances.SupportCan a party be entitled to more than one type of support?Yes, a party can be entitled to more than one type of support. For example, your cohabitation agreement could provide that, in the event of a divorce, your partner will receive a lump sum payment as well as fixed monthly payments. What is a Lump Sum Payment?A lump sum payment is a one-time payment of money, as opposed to a series of recurring payments. Additional Claus esWhat are Additional Clauses? The Additional Clauses feature allows you to add your own clauses to cover any issues that LawDepots standard cohabitation agreement does not cover. When writing your own clause, be clear and concise, and write it in a complete sentence or paragraph. Avoid creating clauses that do not deal with property or finances. For example, you should avoid including a clause stating that your partner must do the laundry twice a week. Signing DetailsWhat is a Notary Public?A Notary Public is a state-appointed official who is authorized to authenticate certain legal documents, such as declarations, acknowledgments, deeds, mortgages, and other contracts. What is an Affidavit of Execution? An Affidavit of Execution is a sworn statement by a witness to the signing of a document in which the witness confirms that the proper execution of that document occurred. What is a Certificate of Independent Legal Advice?A certificate of Independent Legal Advice is a document that st ates that a party has received legal advice on a proposed matter, from an independent lawyer who is not associated with the other party.Do I need to file my cohabitation agreement anywhere? No. You do not need to file your cohabitation agreement. However, both you and your partner should keep a copy in a safe, secure place where you will be able to find it.

Introduction to the First Sergeant

Introduction to the First Sergeant Introduction to the First Sergeant If an NCO (noncommissioned officer) is the backbone of the U.S. Armed Forces, then the first sergeant is the heart and soul. No other enlisted person carries the responsibility and authority of the first sergeant. To do the job well, a first sergeant must be an expert in the following: Promotions/demotionsMilitary/civilian lawCounseling/disciplineLeave and passesEvaluations/inspectionsPublic speakingBilletingPCS movesTDYsPay problems and proceduresChild and family supportBad checks/budgeting/loansRequisitionsDress and appearanceAwards and decorationsUnit historyParades/ceremoniesFamily advocacyMedical benefits and requirementsRe-enlistments/retirementsWeight controlProfessional military educationID card privilegesOff-limit areas/restrictions/etc The first sergeant is the primary liaison with the commander on all matters concerning the enlisted corps. He or she is the eyes and ears for the commander and the voice of the enlisted force. The role is so important that all of the services, with the exceptions of the Navy and Coast Guard, use them. The Navy and Coast Guard split the duties of the first sergeant between various chief petty officers, the COB (Chief of the Boat), and the squadron XOs (executive officers). First Sergeants in the Army and Marines In the Army and the Marines, the first sergeant is a rank E-8. In the Army, depending mostly upon your military occupational specialty (MOS) and other qualifications, when you are promoted to E-8, you become either a first sergeant or a master sergeant (who usually serves in a staff position). In the Army, the first sergeant retains his or her original MOS. In other words, an infantry MOS becomes an ?infantry  first sergeant and a medical MOS becomes a medical first sergeant. In the Marine Corps, selective E-7s are chosen to become first sergeants upon promotion to E-8. These select few are then awarded a new MOS and can be assigned first sergeant duties in any type of unit, regardless of their original MOS. First Sergeants in the Air Force In the Air Force, the position of the first sergeant used to be a volunteer-only occupation that could be held by an E-7, an E-8, or an E-9. Under that system, one volunteered to retrain into the first sergeant career field and, if accepted, remained in that job for the rest of their career, unless they applied to retrain again (or return to their job), or got disqualified (fired). All of this changed in October 2002. The job of the first sergeant in the Air Force is now a special duty assignment with a set tour length of three years. Volunteers are still sought, but if there are not enough, non-volunteers in the ranks of E-7, E-8, or E-9 are selected based on their service records and commander recommendations.   The first tour is for three years. About two years into the tour, the member can apply for another three-year tour and, depending on Air Force needs, may be selected for a second tour. Like the Marine Corps, an Air Force first sergeant can be assigned to first sergeant duties in any type of squadron, regardless of what their previous job, or Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC), was. Because of the high degree of responsibility and performance required for first sergeants, members returning to their previous jobs after this three-year tour will likely be much more competitive for promotion. In all the services, however, you can recognize the first sergeant because of the diamond centered on the chevrons of his or her uniform, which was first authorized for wear in the Army in 1847. History of the First Sergeant   The first sergeant has always been held as  a highly visible, distinctive, and sometimes notorious position in the military unit. It has a convoluted history which dates back before the United States was even founded. The 17th-century Prussian Army appears to have been the starting point for what was later called the first sergeant in the U.S. Army. The Prussian Army Feldwebel seems to have combined the duties of not only the first  sergeant  but of sergeant major as well. Standing at the top of the noncommissioned hierarchy of rank, they were the overseers of the companys enlisted personnel. To this end, they kept the Hauptman, or company commander, informed of everything that went on in the company - whether NCOs were performing their duties in a satisfactory manner, whether their training was properly accomplished, and that all soldiers were accounted for in their quarters at the end of the day. First Sergeant in the U.S. Army George Washington relied heavily on the advice of General Baron von Steuben when deciding how to set up what would become the U.S. Army. During this time, von Steuben wrote what is referred to as the Blue Book of Regulations. This book covered most of the organizational, administrative and disciplinary details necessary to operate the Continental Army. While Von  Steuben  outlined the duties of such NCOs as the sergeant major, quartermaster sergeant, and other key NCOs, it was the company first sergeant (the American equivalent of the Prussian Feldwebel) to which he directed most of his attention. First sergeants must be intimately acquainted with the character of every soldier in the company and should take great pains to impress upon their minds the indispensable necessity of the strictest obedience as the foundation of order and regularity, von Steuben wrote. Since the first sergeant was responsible for the entire company, he was, in von Steubens words, not to go on duty, unless with the whole company, but is to be in camp quarters to answer any call that may be made. On the march or on the battlefield, they were never to lead a platoon or section, but always to be a file closer in the formation of the company. First Sergeant as Top Kick and First Shirt In the Army and Marines, the first sergeant is often referred to as Top or Top Kick. The first sergeant is the top enlisted person in the unit and a metaphorical kick in the pants is a motivational tool to get the troops into gear. In the Air Force, a first sergeant is often referred to as Shirt, or First Shirt.  The origins of this term remain a mystery, but it has stuck around and led to spin-off nicknames: Prospective  first sergeants who are shadowing Air Force first sergeants  are known as Undershirts and Air Force NCOs who temporarily fill in for the first sergeant when the Shirt is on leave are often referred to as T-shirt (in which the T stands for temporary).

A Smarter Treatment for Scoliosis

A Smarter Treatment for Scoliosis A Smarter Treatment for Scoliosis We all remember getting ready for school in the morning: picking out what clothes to wear, brushing our hair. But how many remember having to start the day painfully moving around with an uncomfortable back brace? For many children with scoliosis, its a disease that can affect them physically but also psychologically, wearing them down mentally with the difficulties of using a brace. The idea is that the brace will allow you to avoid getting surgery, something that can be costly but that also has risks, says Levi DeLuke. He should know. DeLuke went through both the brace and the surgery. Graduating with a B.A. in mechanical engineering from Yale University, hes part of a team hoping to improve the situation. Testing a prototype of the device at the Curvy Girls Scoliosis International Conference in 2014. Image: Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support Group The teams work originated with an engineering fellowship at Yale University. We were interested in doing something related to scoliosis and we knew it was vital to spend a lot of time talking to doctors, parents, and kids, he says. We realized from this work that children often are told to wear a brace all day and often dont do it and even wear it incorrectly. This increases the chance of needing corrective surgery. We wanted to create a device to gather information on the treatment but encourage them to wear it and provide helpful feedback for all. Using a Smart Strap, they replace the existing strap and embed it with sensors. It reveals how long its being worn and the level of tightness, says DeLuke, who is also chief technical officer and co-founder of Wellinks, the company created that is slated to put out the strap. The first prototype was hacked together. We used an Arduino to service the processor, and you have the accelerometer and other parts. Back brace syncing via bluetooth. Image: Wellinks The software uses mobile technology and syncs the data to see progress updates, he explains. The smartphone application that downloads the data from the device shows, for example, how tight the strap is and how tight the strap needs to be pulled. All the data is sent to the web where a clinician can log in to a dashboard. They can evaluate and set different tightness values, he says. This tells you where they want the strap to be. Awarded $100,000 through the YEI Innovation Fund, the reaction during this journey has been strong, DeLuke says, and theyre excited about getting closer to bringing it to market. Weve done trials with clinical partners and are in the process of our first manufacturing run right now and are aiming to start sales next summer, he says. The surgeries might be upwards of $100,000 to insurance and you can lose a lot of flexibility from fusing your spine. If we can help children and parents with this, that would be very rewarding to us. Why Digital Networking Is the New Business Card

Why Digital Networking Is the New Business Card Why Digital Networking Is the New Business Card Business cards are a waste of money. There, I said it. I know they can look really cool - metal, gold-leaf, embossed, magnetic, doubles as a bottle opener, etc. However, if you’re anything like me, your post-network event timeline goes something like this: Don’t get me wrong, contact information is incredibly important - office number, cell phone number and email address - but we’ve moved beyond the traditional business card, especially now that nearly all of us carry around a mini-computer in our pockets. Your cell phone provides an even better opportunity to connect with people beyond a 3.5” X 2” piece of paper. To test this theory, I’ve gone all in  at my last few events. When the obligatory, “Do you have a card?” question comes up, I answered with, “No, I don’t carry them anymore - let’s connect on LinkedIn,” and we did. Instead of handing out business cards (which inevitably head for the recycle bin), take the opportunity to digitally connect with someone at your next event or conference . The easiest way to accomplish this is to connect with them on social media. If you’re not into social media - although you should be for the sake of your personal brand - it’s not impossible. Simply exchange a text message or quick email to share your contact information, keeping your conversation top of mind and top of inbox. If you do go the social media route to digitally connect - which I highly recommend - here are my thoughts for digitally connecting on some of the most popular channels. Pros : As a site defined as “a business and employment-oriented social networking service mainly used for professional networking,” LinkedIn is a great place to digitally connect. Odds are, your profile can do more for you than just your business card or even your resume . For one, your picture will accompany your contact information. Remember the old adage, “put a face to a name” - done. Once connected, they can contact you directly through LinkedIn’s messaging service. You can also see what other connections the two of you might have in common. Additionally, your new contacts can view your full professional summary and experience that you might not have been able to cover when you initially met. If you’ve built out your LinkedIn profile thoroughly , you can include links to your portfolio and examples of your work. Cons : It’s not as much a con as it is a reality, but not everyone has a profile on LinkedIn. And even if they do, some aren’t very active on the platform. However, your chances are pretty good to make a meaningful connection given the number of professionals on the platform. Pros : Connecting on Twitter is easy - one click and you’re a follower. Twitter, known as a micro-blogging platform, is the place where many professionals build their personal brands . The ability to include hyperlinks and hashtags quickly and easily in a tweet is a great place for individuals to promote their content. If your new contacts are blogging or publishing content, they’re most likely using Twitter to amplify that content to a larger audience. You can tell a lot about a person by the way they write, so use this as an opportunity to learn more about someone you may not know that much about. Cons : A social media post has the shortest lifetime on Twitter -   about 15 minutes  by some estimates. Ultimately, this means there’s a lot of noise (on average, about 6,000 tweets per second) and content can easily get lost. To prevent missing out, you can choose to be notified when a contact publishes a tweet. Twitter is also the place where many people tout their opinions and reactions to certain events or topics, and some people go overboard. A good rule of thumb for networking (digitally or in-person): keep anything religious or political to yourself. Pros : If you really hit it off with a new contact, feel free to connect away on Facebook and/or Instagram, as both platforms have the most personal content published. We’ve all heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: People do business with people they know, like and trust. Digitally connecting with your contact on Facebook or Instagram allows you to see a more complete, authentic and well-rounded picture of who they are away from the confines of their career. I’m friends with several of my business contacts on Facebook and Instagram. This type of networking can provide incredible value and is indicative of the shift we’re seeing where the lines between our business and personal lives continue to blur. Cons : Profiles on both Facebook and Instagram are typically more private than on any other social media network. If you choose to digitally connect on Facebook and/or Instagram, make sure you’re fairly confident that your new contact is (1) active on those platforms, and (2) would likely accept the connection request. As with Twitter, some people choose to share things on Facebook and Instagram that you might be better off not seeing, so use caution. When in doubt on whether to add a business acquaintance as a friend or follower, stick to LinkedIn and Twitter. It might feel weird going to your next networking event without business cards, but it’s worth a try. Connecting digitally is best accomplished on social media, but a simple text or email exchange at the event also works well. When you hand over that business card, who knows where it might end up. By networking digitally, whether it be via social media or email , you’ll help make yourself more memorable and be able to tell a more complete story about who you are and what you do. 3 Tips to Ace Your Job Exit Interview

3 Tips to Ace Your Job Exit Interview 3 Tips to Ace Your Job Exit Interview Participating in an exit interview is a great opportunity to reflectively close a chapter of your professional life. These meetings are typically conducted by human resources professionals. The data they compile is usually confidential, so you can feel comfortable sharing your honest feedback. It’s much easier to prepare for an exit interview than a job interview. Unlike in a job interview, you are not being evaluated or scored for your answers. Your feedback helps professionals at your soon-to-be-former company analyze their hiring, leadership, communication, retention efforts and other practices.   It can feel very liberating to be asked to reflect on your experiences at a company that you are leaving. But proceed with caution, keeping in mind that you are still at work. You should share both positive and negative feedback that is relevant. But do so in a way that is thoughtful and respectful.   Aim to provide meaningful, professional responses. In other words, you don’t want to trash your experience if it has negative dimensions to it. It’s in your best interest to leave with your professionalism intact. So make it your goal to share feedback that is reflective, honest and helpful.   How to Prepare Companies are always interested to learn why employees leave and how they can retain their talent longer. So prepare yourself by thinking through why you decided to leave and figuring out how to tell that story in a way that your HR colleagues can use. Reflect on these questions: When did you start thinking you were ready for a new job? Was there a particular catalyst, or were your surprised by an unexpected opportunity? While still honoring your anonymity, HR can report that staff members are leaving because they get restless when there is no trajectory, for example. This feedback is more useable than “my job got boring.” So challenge yourself to really examine your situation so that you can offer some helpful perspective. Consider how you answered similar questions during the job interview that you just aced, and don’t hesitate to use that feedback to assist your HR colleagues in their work.   Productively Discussing Leadership It gets a bit tricky when you are asked to give feedback on the management. But again, you should feel welcome to share your honest thoughts. While it may seem like it would feel good to say, “My boss was an immature jerk,” challenge yourself to think this through more fully. Aimless venting is a missed opportunity on your part. HR will have a hard time using that feedback to enact change.   Instead, generate concrete and usable statements. For example: “My supervisor didn’t seem fully qualified for his role. He seemed to need his team more than I thought was appropriate. For example, he insisted I come into the office on a day I was sick because we had a donor event that he said I couldn’t miss. I understand that events are important. I had never missed one before or after, but I felt horrible on that particular day. I think part of qualifying to be a manager should be having the skills to troubleshoot an unexpected development like an ill staff member even in a special case like a big event.”   It’s fair to talk about whatever you think needs to be addressed, but do it in a reflective and professional way. Also, remember to cite examples to help clarify and support the points you aim to make. Remember   Two vital skills in professional life are learning to strategically curb emotion and to take advantage of opportunities. Embrace this conversation and the chance it affords you to reflect on your time at the institution. Then you can move on feeling like a seasoned and mature professional fully prepared for the challenge ahead. Congratulations and best of luck!

How to Get a Job in Hollywood

How to Get a Job in Hollywood How to Get a Job in Hollywood Achieving a career in Hollywood  might be a dream for many, but its not a challenge for the faint of heart. Part of the problem is that theres a massive amount of competition out there and everyone is looking for the same job. The good news is that this is one of those areas in life where persistence tends to pay off. More often than not, its the person who doesnt give up who eventually manages to get a job in Hollywood and keep it. If you think you just need a degree from a topnotch school or that you must know someone in the business to get a foot in the door, think again. Neither of these things is guarantees that you will work in film or television. Your desire and ability to prove yourself is what will ultimately get you hired or fired. That said, there are a few things you can do to up your chances.   Be Willing to Work for Free As ugly as that sounds, its absolutely essential that you be willing to work either for free or for a very low wage. Those who are financially able to do so should be able to get a position with most film and television crews relatively quickly. These positions are often entry level, but its an in. Youll have an opportunity to meet others in the business and you can learn on the job. Many of these free jobs quickly lead to full-time careers. Leave the Ego at Home Hollywood is full of egos and it doesnt  need one more. Youll find that most people will be a lot more receptive to helping you if you check your ego at the door when you come to town. You might find that your ego comes in handy someday later on- but only after youve mastered a few of the Hollywood ropes. Otherwise, it will just get in the way. Be Persistent Spend some portion of every day doing something that helps you get to where you want to be. Meet people, make calls, send letters or e-mails- do whatever it takes to move forward and do it without break. Seize Opportunities Many of the jobs youll have to commit to in Hollywood- like those free ones- will be less than glamorous, but theyll be full of opportunities. Seize these opportunities as they occur. If youre sent off to copy scripts, make an extra copy so you can read it yourself and learn something. If youre forced to field calls for your boss, he may let you listen in when he takes one, so grab the opportunity to learn by listening to whats being said. Be Respectful Youre going to come across dozens- if not hundreds- of different types of jobs in Hollywood. Many will be positions you wouldnt dream of taking, but those who are doing them might actually enjoy them. Keep your disparaging opinions to yourself. Although it might seem unlikely, the one guy you ridicule for his job might be the one guy who could have helped you get ahead. Know Where to Look If youre looking in the classifieds section of your local newspaper or on career sites like Monster.com, chances are youre not going to have much luck. Most production jobs are never advertised. People are often hired by word of mouth and through pre-established relationships. This is why its so important to get to know as many people as possible as soon as possible. You might find a few jobs in Variety or  in The Hollywood Reporter, but in all likelihood, youll have to track down available jobs on your own. You might want to steer clear of Hollywood Job websites that charge  monthly fees because, unfortunately, many of the jobs they advertise are filled before the listing even goes up. Besides, even if the job was still open, no production person has the time to sift through the hundreds upon hundreds of resumes that a service like this would generate. They want to hire the best person for the job and more often than not, that person has been identified by someone else already on staff. Believe it or not, getting a job in Hollywood is not impossible. Becoming a great director, writer, makeup artist, electrician, agent, or executive all starts by getting out there. Meet new people, take the low-level jobs, and take a few classes. You could be on your way to the top before you know it.
